Backflow
Backflow is a situation caused by household water (from garden hoses, hot tubs, water storage tanks, etc.) that flows back into the community pipeline. Utah's plumbing code requires that all connections between drinking water and any other source be protected. Equipment can be found at most hardware stores. Here are some ways to install back flow protection:
Pressure Vacuum Breaker (PVB). This unit requires an annual inspection. Test results should be sent to the Water Master. It can have control valves after the PVB, and there is only one required between the Corporation line and the Service line.
Reduced Pressure Back Flow Assembly (RPA). This unit must be tested annually and a report filed with the Water Master.
Atmospheric Vacuum Breaker (AVB). These devices avoid the need for annual testing, but must be installed on every zone. The contol valve must be between the AVB and the Corporation line.
Hose Bib Vacuum Breakers. These breakers are installed between the hose and the valve going into the house.
